Thread: Посмотреть кому-нибудь в лицо (в глаза)

Для меня удивительно, что где-то читается Она посмотрела ему пристально в лицо. Как это правильно? Мне сказали, что только (по)смотреть что и (по)смотреть на что правильны. В самом деле, в словаре нет других употреблений. Может быть, это архаизм?

It's absolutely normal, standard, modern Russian.
"Смотреть" can be used with other prepositions as well depending on the direction you look and general context.

Он посмотрел на ее глаза - He looked at her eyes.
Он посмотрел в ее глаза - he looked her in the eyes
Я посмотрел за диван(ом), но моей кошки там не было - I looked behind the sofa, but my cat wasn't there.
etc.

Sorry, I didn't quite ask the question I had in mind. What puzzles me is the dative case here.

If you look at the entry for смотре́ть on WordReference (sorry, can't link cyrillic characters in a url on this forum for some reason), it's listed in exactly this construct: смотрерь в лицо (+dative)

The direct URL to the entry is http://www.wordreference.com/ruen/смотре́ть but phpBB doesn't support it.

Смотреть в лицо чему (книжн.) — то же, что смотреть в глаза чему.

Now it does not mention смотреть в лицо кому, and заискивать перед кем-н is not exactly the same as watching someone in the face.

Writing this I realize that this constructions are not that crazy. You do say свернуть голову кому-либо, right? So in fact this has little to do with смотреть. Must be some specific use (yet one more) of the dative case, when a verb's complement is part of someone's body, and this someone gets to be in dative case.

That is accusative case, not dative. Dative - лицу.

You can also say "Он посмотрел ей в глаза". Right? Or would it be too ..um... colloquial?

We never say so, but you can see such a sentence in romantic literature so it's ..um... what's antonym for colloquial?

Смотреть кому-л. в глаза/лицо is acceptable within any style.

"Это ты разбил вазу? Ну-ка, смотри мне в глаза и отвечай!"

That's what I wanted to write yesterday. But it was too late, so I decided to put it off. )
