    Here I would say "hampered"

The sickness (/illness) hampered him in participating in our work.

or to paraphrase to get the real meaning:

His illness prevented him from participating in our work.

There is another meaning of this word:

    Она помешала суп.
    She stirred the soup.
Please, correct my mistakes, except for the cases I misspell something on purpose!

Я бы сказал "prevented". "hampered" для меня звучит немного неуместного.

    "kept" тоже звучит естественно.

prevented or kept would mean that he couldn't participate at all
hampered means that he could participate, but it made it more difficult.

That nuance I think is important, or maybe помешала means the former?

It could be: 1)prevented, kept from, made it impossible, or: 2)made it difficult, interfered with, restricted, etc. ...
    More context would sure help!
Well, I don't know what to say. I want to say thanks to the Academy, to Mama, to Papa and to my dog. I love you all.

In this context, that would be my interpretation. That is, he was not able to participate at all. as opposed to, say, "мешала" which would mean that it was harder but he did work nevertheless. IMO.
