    Погибнут люди

    Почему говорят "погибнут люди" а не "погибнут людей"?

    Because люди is the subject of the sentence, therefore it must be in nominative.

    Гибнуть is an intransitive verb as the English verbs perish and die are.

    People will die. Not *People will be died.
