Hi!

Well, it can be translated as 'of' if you want to do it the "English" way.
A criminal case of gas exposion has been started.
Anyway, по in Russian is more about to a movement to/on the surface of something:
Like
In other cases it can be translated as "on/about"
лекция по философии - a lecture on philososphy
I do not claim that my opinion is absolutely true.
If you've spotted any mistake in my English, please, correct it. I want to be aware of any mistakes to efficiently eliminate them before they become a habit.
A criminal case has been started [over / in relation to / about] the gas explosion.
To me, "over" or "in relation to" sound much better than "about," but "about" is acceptable.
Dear citizens of MR -- please correct my Russian mistakes!"
1) doesn't work here; 2) requires Genitive.
So better:
I agree, the meaning could be similar to "in relation to / about".
