The Russian word ‘хуй’ (obscene word for ‘penis’) is known to have many derivatives of very different meanings.
There is also an euphemism chain for this word:
— ‘хер’ — the obsolete name of the Cyrillic letter ‘х’, the first letter of the word ‘хуй’. (Now the word ‘хер’ became obscene itself. It's not an innocuous euphemism anymore.)
— ‘хрен’ — ‘horseradish’. A bitter vegetable traditionally associated with something bad. Moreover, its shape can resemble a penis. This word is not so obscene.
— ‘фиг’ — a shortened form of фига ‘fig’, a name of an offensive gesture also known as шиш or ду́ля (fist with the thumb placed between the index finger and the middle one). The least obscene variant. (It's not an euphemism for ‘хуй’ itself, only for its derivatives.)

All of this four roots have almost the same derivatives with the same meaning.

The word ‘чёрт’ (‘devil’) can also be used in some derivatives.
