I agree with Inego that a typo could have occurred, and instead of "опознание" (identification) they printed "опоздание" (delay, being late). The further context supports this guess, look at the words "запомнил" (remembered), "узнать" (recognize), "если не сдрейфит" (if he does not get cold feet).
