I just saw a sign for that said "кредиты для населения". I know what it means, but I was a bit curious as to why they said население. Not that I've read a wide-range of Russian stuff, but it seems like the only time I've ever seen that word is in an official statistical sense (К примеру, "Сегодня население РФ-и 147 миллионов человек.") Why do they use it here? Just to be different? To include illegals immigrants as well (instead of specifying для россяне)? To sound populist?
