Thread: должно было случиться

As I understand it должно было случиться would usually mean 'was bound to happen' eg.

точно ждал чего-то он, точно должно было что-то случиться
Все было так безоблачно, что обязательно должно было что-нибудь случиться.
Это должно было случиться, но нужно, чтобы это не повторялось

But it seems like it can also mean 'must have happened'?

eg.

Ждали в тот день ее матерьяла.
Она ни разу не опоздала
до этого дня со статьей своей.
Отличница — это по жизни всей.
Но вот уже три.
Вот уже четыре…
Должно было что-то случиться в мире,
чтобы она опоздала так…

ясно видел, что в его отсутствие должно было что-нибудь случиться: но ему так страшно было думать, что что-нибудь постыдное случилось с его любимою дочерью

Won't this get confusing? Is this usage common? Do we just have to rely on context or is say word ordr important?

the usage of words is important, as is the exact meaning of the whole sentence

the chances are higher that you'll meet this phrase in belles-letters

i think in 90% of cases the meaning would be 'it was bound to happen'

Both usages are common. This phrase is strongly context sensitive.
