Thanks for all the help, everybody. I think I have a stronger grasp on this now. I find that when I study one example in excruciating detail, I come away with a better understanding not just of the example, but also of a concept that can be applied to other situations. In this case, it's the effect of prefixes. So I appreciate that people put up with my endless questions!
