??? "Не пойти ли нам всем в баню?"

I was innocently asking for a recording of this sentence which I thought meant "Why don't we go to the bath house together" (or something like that... I found it online somewhere... Wiktionary, I think.) [can't find the place I got this from right now, is the translation in fact correct?]

However, by recording buddy "Sakura" wrote a comment next to her recording, to tell me:

"Не пойти ли нам всем в баню?", especially "не пойти ли вам всем в баню?" can also mean "buzz off and leave me alone!"
Really? I did not know that, and Wiktionary did not explain it. Is this a sort of expression? Where does it come from and is it very rude or just a bit dismissive?

Is it like "get lost!" or something like that?

"Иди в баню" is rather moderate, like "get lost", "I'm tired of you". "Иди в жопу" (lit. "go into the ass") is more rude; and there are other terms that are even worse.

Ok, thanks for that, I think I get it! And right now I don't want to learn any slang or rude expresesions.

Maybe the Wiktionary editor was entertaining himself while he was entering some example sentences.... this makes me a bit worried about what else might be in there!!!

I wasn't exactly planning to go to Russia and suggest that strangers go to the bath house with me...... but nevertheless..... it's good to be aware of these type of expressions....

The phrase may also mean exactly what it means (let's go to sauna).

There is a famous old Soviet comedy "Irony of Destiny", where the guys visited sauna before every New Year holiday: "Каждый Новый год мы ходим в баню".

Oh really? It comes from that film? I've seen it! Very good film

But they went to a bath house, didn't they? I don't think there was any sauna in the film.

    there's a difference between
Let's all go down to the banya!
    and
Why don't you go down to the banya!

I'd guess it is as unoffensive as Why don't you make like a tree and leave?

In some cases it could also mean "Why don't we get banned?". "Баня" = ban in Internet slang (быть в бане - to be banned).
    Example:
Ну что виталя .... довыпендривался ? Пора и в баню сходить. ИМХО.... И в скайпе обматерил меня. (выпендриваться - to show off)
