    Spelling Problem: Ы или И....

    I am having trouble picking the right ending when turning a Noun into Plural form.

    Either I am misunderstanding the spelling rules, or I don't have the complete set... or there are lots of exceptions.

    Has any non-Russian learner cracked it...?
    Or could a Russian person explain it to me?

    Maybe we can make some kind of permanent thread or lesson about this; I can't be the only person having a hard time with it...

    площадь - площады
    площадь - площади

    Seems fairly intuitive to me. As per the spelling rules, if it ends in velar consonants (к, г, х) or the "hush sounds" (ш, щ, ч or ж), it's и. Otherwise ы.

    In the case of площадь, it ends in a soft sound, which softens the ы into и.

    неа. вообще-то произносится шалаш(ы), чертеж(ы).

    oh shi~ i thought spelling is произношение

    По орфографии: в конце слова как пишется, так и произносится. Блин, вы же не произносите Anyway, если отталкиваться от произношения, то примерно так: как пишется, так и произносится. Исключение: после Ж и Ш НИКОГДА не пишется Ы и не произносится И, независимо от того в конце слова или нет. Или spelling - произношение? I am confused

    Spelling = написание
    Pronunciation = произношение

    The д in площадь is soft and it remains soft through the whole declension, so you have to write площади.

    Вот так и забивают мозги изучающим русский язык. Я имею в виду, что ты прав, Михан. Они научатся говорить шалашИ, а потом общаешься с ними онлайн через микрофон и начинаешь диву даваться и долбить-переучивать. Я считаю этот вопрос различия спеллинга и произношения требует обязательного прояснения.
