Thread: будем делать

Currently reading an Adventure Time comic, to work me into Russian books steadily.

Jake is filming something and then the dialogue reads:

Finn:
"Потрясно! А что мы будем делать с этим видео?"

Jake:
"Эм... Уверен, мы найдем ему какое-нибудь применение".

Through reading in general I come more and more to terms with imperfective and perfective but here I have to wonder why one is using imperfective and being answered in the perfective even though they surely must be talking about it in the same aspect?

Any insight into this? And also would changing Finn's question to the perfective have any effect on the feeling of the sentence? (A feeling I am clearly missing already).

No. Both sentences can be switched to perfect/imperfect independently without changing overall meaning.

No. Hmmm.... I try to explain it in some way...
Imagine dialogue:
- Ты знаешь про Джона? (Do you know about John?)
- А что он опять натворил? (What did he do again?)
- Он льёт азот в воду! (He pours nitrogen into the water!)
Are you confused with "tense missprediction" in this example? I am interested...

Hmm... This example is a bit tricky to grasp (for me) especially as we are dealing with the past test first "натворил" and then the present "льёт" which I don't think would happen in English anyway "What did he do?" "He eats fish" would sound completely strange.

My example we are talking about two things in the future, one which is imperfective "what will we be doing with this (будем делать)" and then an answer which is perfective as if it is an action to be completed. My question is would there be any difference atall, if the perfective was used in Finn's question, and why was this choice made in the translation.

Well... Russian has a little different relation with tenses, so this scenario is acceptable. Let's try another example:
- Ты поел? (Did you eat?)
- Поем через 10 минут. (I'll eat in 10 minutes.)
This looks like "tense switching" also. But I think it is acceptable in english too. Because we imply:
- [Нет.] Поем через 10 минут. ([No, I didn't.] I'll eat in 10 minutes.)
So, this "tense switching" is nothing more than "shortening by dropping useless words off". Does this sound correct for you?

I wasn't familiar with the slang term "потрясно" (though I could guess its meaning), but otherwise, the Russian made complete sense to me, including the switch from imperfective to perfective verb aspects. I would suggest the translation:

FINN: Awesome! And what sorts of things might we get up to with this video?
JAKE: Um... I'm sure we'll find some kind of use for it.

In other words, Finn's use of the imperfective future suggests that there are limitless and indefinite possibilities, while Jake's response with the perfective suggests that they'll eventually settle on a specific plan.
