Seems fairly intuitive to me. As per the spelling rules, if it ends in velar consonants (к, г, х) or the "hush sounds" (ш, щ, ч or ж), it's и. Otherwise ы.
In the case of площадь, it ends in a soft sound, which softens the ы into и.
