    Spelling

One thing I'm having a hard time trying to do is writing and spelling. I know the alphabet and know how to write script, but I'm always spelling things wrong. I know the saying, "repetition is the mother of learning" but is there an easier way to learn spelling?

    Thanks.

Nope. It's all about paying attention/listening closely and just grinding it into your brain. Don't let it intimidate you though; it'll come with practice, and it's a pretty straightforward language in this regard -- you don't have ph/f sounds, etc.
Заранее благодарю всех за исправление ошибок в моём русском.

I have a lot more trouble spelling my own language English than Russian, or any other language for that matter.

Do native Russians have any problems with spelling? I mean, do they have spelling tests for children like in English speaking countries etc?

Sure we have. But in the school they teach us how to solve main spelling troubles. For example - yesterday my little daughter had some problems doing her homework. She wrote somthing like "котатся" so I asked her "do you think it came from "кот" she said no and found a similar word where unstressed vowel is stressed - кАтят (they roll). Then she asked a question to this word for checking is there soft sign needed or not - что делать? - кататься - for example in another case it would be он что делает? - катается - there is no soft sign there.
Unfortunatly sometime a trick with making unstressed vowel stressed does not work espesially for words from another languages.

To be honest, Russian spelling is soooo much easier than English. Russian is generally phonetic. Yes maybe you don't know whether to write an A or an O, an E or an И but generally if you know how it sounds you know how it's spelt. I am 19 and still have troubles with spelling English (my native language).

Маленький соседский мальчик пришел из школы с 2-кой по-русскому. Когда мама открыла тетрадь-умилению не было предела, сынок умудрился в слове из 2-х букв сделать 4 ошибки…. И слово это было — Еж…. в трактовке ее мальчика – Йошь.

That reminds me of some joke about how Catherine the Great (who was German) managed to make 4 spelling mistakes in the word Щи since in German it is transliterated as Schtschi.

In fact that's not my brand of vodka as well but I thought the first one was a good parody of тюремный шансон that's why I posted it.
