There is no way for native Russian to pronounce Эти non-palatalized unless (s)he plays heavy accent or apes. Probably your ear is unable to make difference yet. Intensive listening will help sooner or later.

There are exceptions of course. Russian consists more of exceptions than of rules... For example, many words of foreign origin (as well as transliterated foreign names) are pronounced with non-palatalized consonants before е (but never before и).
