saying "I just realized something" in russian

I don't trust google translate again. The translation of

    "я просто понял, что-то"

    Seems wrong somehow.

It is. The Google bot is damn stupid most of the time.

    "Я кое-что понял" or "Я только что кое-что понял" or "Я тут кое-что понял".

If "something" is immediately followed by some details (what exactly I realized), then I can suggest such turn of speech:
    И тут до меня дошло: <what exactly I realized>
    Например:
И тут до меня дошло: я-то остался без работы!

Google can not translate well in about 100%

More generally, Valda, when "just" means "merely" or "simply" (as in "I'm just a gigolo...") you can translate it with просто, but when it means "in the very recent past; only a few seconds/hours/days ago", you can translate it with только что:

It just dawned on me that she is just pretending to be a paraplegic.

До меня только что дошло, что она просто притворяется инвалидом.
