    Prohibition

In meaning, usage, or nuance, is there any difference between the verbs: запрещать and воспрещать?

По значению, употреблению, или оттенку, есть ли какая-нибудь разница между глаголами: запрещать и воспрещать?

"Воспрещать(ся)" sounds more bombastic and is far less used. I don't think it is a verb of everyday speech. I even don't think that the form "я воспрещаю" is possible... It sounds funny and strange anyway.
Just don't use "воспрещать" and don't bother with it.
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

Yes, it is. It is a stylistic difference. Запрещать is neutral, воспрещать is officialese.

Стилистическая разница. Тогда как «запрещать» можно использовать везде, то «воспрещать» скорее всего попадётся в должностных инструкциях или канцелярите.

By the way Olya, 'bombastic' is not very commonly used in modern English and ironically, it sounds bombastic itself :P A lot of English speakers won't even know what it means...

Да я всё время ищу слово, соответствующее русским "пафосно", "патетично", "помпезно", бррр... Ну не помню сейчас, какое еще*. Ну вот в общем, самое походящее, что мне всегда удавалось найти - это bombastic. А какое слово тут надо?

    *О, вспомнила: напыщенно!

Yes, I think "воспрещать" is mainly used in passive constructions only: Что-либо воспрещается. - Something is prohibited. or: Вход воспрещён. etc.

I think not only "я воспрещаю" is impossible. One neither can say "вы воспрещаете", "учитель воспрещает" etc.
Maybe the only possible active construction with "воспрещать" is where a subject is not a person, but is something abstract like "закон воспрещает". However, I'm not quite sure of that.

I second you. «В помещении курить воспрещается», I think is the most known prohibition.

They usually settle for "Не курить!". Generally speaking, prohibition signs in russian just follow the similar pattern:

    По газону не ходить!
    На уроке не разговаривать!
    В помещении не курить!
    Хороводы не водить!
    Из копытца не пить! )))

Yes, this is it. I meant instructions, not signs.
