Thread: Pre-1917 spelling question

In 1800 how would spelling взятіе as взятие be considered? a glaring error? an informalism? an arbitrary choice?

Thanks, it actually appears in an inscription on the flag of the Duc de Bourbon Grenadiers (in Russian service). I'm wondering if it indicates a botched restoration.

I think I am confused. Isn't it how it was in the old Russian alphabet? They had both i and и. For example:

Yes, but you were supposed to use i before a vowel.
