Thread: Possessives and REFLEXIVE possessives

Zdrastvootye (I don't have a Russian keyboard, or Russian fonts...and pressing a key combo doesn't bring up any Russian letters either )

I'm having major problems understanding when to use a normal possessive and a reflexive. Da, ya znayoo what they MEAN (svoy etc means someone's OWN), however, I know the meaning can vary depending on the context of the sentence. Neither of my books explain this in much detail, and they only give one example each.

Oki, here is a cursory overview:

Usually one uses reflexive possesive pronouns when the person posessing the object agrees with the subject of the sentence. Clarity through examples:

Я пью свое пиво = I am drinking my beer
Я пью его пиво = I am drinking his beer
Я пью мое пиво = Hurts Russian brain

Он пит свое пиво = He is drinking his (own) beer
Он пит мое пиво = He is drinking my beer
Он пит его пиво = He is drinking his beer (where his could be someone else)

Мы пьём свое пиво = We are drinking our beer
Мы пьём мое пиво = We are drinking my beer
Мы пьём их пивo = We are drinking their beer

Make sense now?

Of course those links have better explanations, but do they have alcoholic examples? I think not!

Ya nye paneemayoo "yego", "yeyo" ee "eex". Moye, tvoye, nash ee vash are completely clear, though.

For example:

"yego dyetee gavaryit po-rooskee". Pacheemoo "yego"? Are the children not his own? I'm seriously confused here!

Hmm.. Его дети говорят по-русски -> His children speak Russian. Notice that the subject is His children. So the children are his, no one else's.

Compare:
Это Владимир. Его дети пьют водку. = This is Vladimir. his children drink vodka. Extremely clear whoes children it is!

Это Саша и Дима. Его дети пьют водку. = This is Sasha and Dima. His children drink vodka. What? Whoes? Unclear!

Это Владимир. Свои дети пьют водку. = Impossible. You can not have свои unless it has a corrseponding personal pronoun in the sentence!

Владимиа знает, что свои дети пьют водку = Vladimir knows that his children drink vodka. This works!

Ani, this doesn't work because it is actually two bisentences:

The correct version is: Владимир знает, что его дети пьют водку
but: Владимир знает своих детей = Vladimir knows his children.

Standard Windows has Russian fonts. Start – Setting – Control Panel – Regional and Language Options – Languages – Details – Add… or ask adults
