Не знаю точно, я не филолог, но мне "северо-западнее" не звучит. Непонятно, какую функцию добавление севера несёт.

Но тем не менее такое слово есть. Это наречие.

Да верно всё!
Просто, сказав северо-западнее, не нужно уже добавлять конкретизирующих наречий и предлогов, таких как отсюда и прочее.
Чаще мы просто употребим другую конструкцию - Солнце встаёт северо-западнее этой точки - без чем, отсюда, здесь.
НО! Солнце встаёт к Северу-Северо-Западу отсюда.

Thanks kawatts & Barm, you helped alot. Everyone else gave me a headache, I spent time reading and banging my head against a wall (I need that emoticon). Dimitri, Cool graphic, I saved it. You can't go 30° northwest though. 30° = "north,northeast,3/4 east" (I looked it up in Chapman's "Piloting, Seamanship and Small Boat Handling" which is the Bible for all things nautical) I prefer 30°, it makes life simple. Leof, you are not of this planet, the sun DOES NOT rise anywhere close to the northwest

I really REALLY want to learn this. I find it is easy to learn things I can relate to, and along the way I learn other things. In searching the forums for an answer, I ran across some interesting things about maps and chartography in Russia and the Soviet period. Like the word "план" I KNOW that word now (I just hope it correct).

Plus it will pi$$ off an old fishman I know who still hates all things Russian because of the factory fishing boats off Cape Cod in the 1960's-70's

I would translate it as "I would like to make a 45-degree turn" (probably relative to the direction you are going in right now), but I have no knowledge of sailing terms, neither Russian nor English.

Here is the main rule of sailing - watch the Sun! - like I do!

I still suspect we don't understand boating terms properly. Well, if it's only to annoy your old friend, then it's ok.
The sentence "Я хочу повернуть на 45 градусов" ("I want to turn 45 degrees") requires an indication "left" or "right"

Probably 365. If so he mixed it up with the number of days in a year :)
It reminds me of that joke:

Well, there should be 365° in a circle, actually, but the Mesopotamians messed up a tad.
