Thread: Meanings of так

In a known song it's said: ·" Что так грустно взять гитару, да петь песни про любовь, иль поехать лучше к Яру разогреть шампанским кровь". I have translated it as: "¿What is more sad, take a guitar and sing songs of love or (on the contrary) go to Яр and heat the blood with champagne." I don't like this translation because так hasn't this meaning of "more". If this were the meaning of the phrase it should be better: "Что бышее грустно..." or rather "Что груще...". Can you clarify this phrase? Thank you.

You've missed some punctuation here. "Что так грустно" is a stand alone sentence here.

Что так грустно. Взять гитару,
Запеть песню про любовь
Иль поехать лучше к «Яру»
Разогреть шампанским кровь

So the translation is something like this:

Why it is so sad (now).
(Let's / why not / may be it is a good idea to) take a Guitar ...
