What is the best way to translate the following (please correct my mistakes)?

Where is the Washington D.C.? - Где находится Вашингтон? / Где - Вашингтон? (Which one is better/more common?)
Virginia is to the north of North Carolina. - Виргиния на север Северной Каролины / Виргиния севернее Северной Каролины.
What state is south of Georgia? - Какой штат на юг Джорджии? / Какой штат южнее Джорджии?
The ocean is in the east. - Океан на востоке.
What continent is Egypt in? - На каком континенте Египет?
What country is east/west of Sweden? - Какая страна на восток/запад Швеции / Какая страна восточнее/западнее Швеции?

I'd say that in many of these sentences "находится" is needed (or at least it's advisable to use the word).

Which state is this? - Какая это страна?

It would be better to translate "state" as "государство" and "country" as "страна" (although sometimes it doesn't matter).

Thanks! I just never know whether I will sound too unnatural using more descriptive words in Russian, but I want to get my idea across. So I guess the best way is to just use the more descriptive words, right?

But I am having trouble figuring out which is better or more common to say about locations of where things are with respect to other locations.

My neighbour has used the comparative adjective when referring to locations, but I have usually seen на север in writing and text.

Should I use the comparative?

на север от, к северу от
But "севернее" and "южнее" are ok too. I can't say that this or that way of expressing this thought is better. )

The variant with omitted verb is sometimes used coloquially, but not the way you do. You may say "(А) Вашингтон, - это (вообще) где?"(Implies that you never heard of such a place before. ) or "Нью-Йорк, - там, на севере, а где (тогда) Вашингтон?" (you're lost while flying a balloon and are trying to regain your bearings...) but, say a teacher in a classroom won't use these forms, he would use your first one.


Virginia is to the north of North Carolina. - Виргиния находится на севере от Северной Каролины (it's still a bit awkward, but passable.)/ Виргиния находится севернее Северной Каролины.
"На севере Северной Каролины" would mean that Virginia is a part of NC. Virginians might object.

What state is south of Georgia? -
same corrections as above.


The ocean is in the east. - Океан на востоке.
Would work in lost in a balloon context or casual conversation. Variant with "находится" is more neutral.

What continent is Egypt in? - На каком континенте Египет?

What country is east/west of Sweden? - Какая страна на востоке от/западе от Швеции / Какая страна восточнее/западнее Швеции?

NEVER EVER USE THE 1ST ONE. 2nd is perfect, except for the typo.

What French cities are on the coast? - Какие французские города расположены на берегу (Атлантического) океана? If you really need to ask this without enumerating all the seas and oceans you'd rather use imperative instead. "Назовите приморские города во Франции."

What is the capital of India? - Какая столица у Индии? Not sure. Again, in classroom context this kind of question is usually asked using imperative. "Назовите столицу Индии." And I'm not avid enough balloonist to get THAT lost

What other cities are close to Berlin? - Какие другие города близко к Берлину?

France is to the north of Spain and Portugal is to the west. - Франция находится на север от Испании, а Португалия на западе. ("находится" can be omitted inn the 2nd clause.) (see the discussion below. This is really tough one. Even for a native speaker.)

USA, Canada, Mexico, etc. form the continent of North America. - США, Канада, Мексика и т.д. составляют континент Северной Америки.
Not quite the way a native speaker would say it, but grammatically OK.

Perfective is usually used in this context. And "проехать" has two different meanings, - "to drive to" and "to drive through" It's OK.

NEVER the second one. "это" may or may not be needed depending on the overall context.

Not quite. "посетил" is formal style, it clashes with "ты". "Какие штаты вы посетили?/В каких штатах ты бывал?"

"тебе нравится" is better... [s:3h2kcb24]You don't "love" multiple states...[/s:3h2kcb24] Sorry brain typo. If it's just one state, either is OK.

What state would you like to visit? - Какой штат ты хотел бы посетить?
"Ты" and "посетил" again. And "побывать" is formal too, unlike "бывать", and you never use "бывать" in subjunctive, and rarely in the future.... "Какой штат ты хотел бы посмотреть?" may be the most appropriate...


What is the biggest/smallest state? - Какой штат США - самый большой/маленький? / Какой в США самый большой/маленький штат?

Мне тоже. В формальном контексте, по крайней мере. Неформально, думаю, "к северу от", - самый правильный вариант.

... And of course, when talking about places where you don't need a balloon in order to get confused, less formal variants are used more often.

Well, that's not an official rule or something, that's just how I use those:
К северу от/на севере от, - if I`m talking about stationary things.
На север, - if I`m talking about movement.


Ok, it's difficult to produce natural-sounding prose on demand, but... Here's my best try.
Я иду на юг, на горизонте к западу от меня виден Вашингтон, а на севере видна какая-то дорога... В небе надо мной летит самолёт. "На восток, кажется", - подумал я. Что там, на восток от Вашингтона? Океан только... А я вот иду в Мексику, на юг стало быть. Но океан, конечно же, по дороге тоже увижу. А самолёт, сккорее всего, пересечёт Атлантику и сядет где-нибудь далеко на востоке. В Лондоне, скажем. Или даже восточнее Лондона, во Франции где-нибудь.

Err... If I confused west and east above, I`m sorry. It`s really difficult to think in terms of the opposite hemisphere in 5 AM....

I seriously can`t find a good way to say exactly this thought in just one sentence.

В Северной Америке есть такие страны как США, Канада, Мексика и т.д.

It won't have the sense that Canada, Mexico, USA, etc. are all the countries there are in the North America, but you can say that in the next sentence, like "И всё." or something more formal.

Word order is a tiny bit off. The better one would be Приблизительно как далеко от США находится Куба? I doubt people would notice that easily in a conversation though.

Again, if it's a classroom or a quiz, imperative would be better. "Назовите единственную центральноамериканскую страну..." In casual speech "Какая" is already "Какая единственная".

I'm not really sure, you may want to consult your grammar reference, but I think that "Если <present>, [то] <future>."
Again, this isn't the most natural way to express the idea... The best one heavily depends on the context of the original sentence (whether you're indeed talking to someone going from Texas to Honduras, someone planning such a trip, or just fancying the notion of such a trip. Most appropriate tense/mood combinations would vary, word order and choice may vary ("Когда" vs "Если" and whether the condition should go first), even grammatical person might.)

The rest looks OK, at least it does to me. But I`m really not that good at error-spotting.

We don't say "центральноамериканская страна". In this case you can say "страна Центральной Америки".

But we do. Google finds tens of thousands of uses. It might not be the best style, sure, but it's a perfectly cromulent word.

Maybe, it's even indispensable sometimes. Try to say "There are such-and-such sights to see in this Central American country." Without a single-word adjective for Central America it becomes painful to read. "В этой стране Центральной Америки есть такие-то и такие-то достопримечательности". Maybe it's just me, but it looks clumsy the way a variant with the adjective wouldn't.

But indeed such an adjectivised form may or may not be OK depending on the context. And in the context above, your variant (with "Центральная Америка") sounds better.
