How do you say in russian "I was Confused"

Привет. У меня есть один простой вопрос.

How do you say in Russian "I was confused"?

For example today I wanted to say to a Russian costumer that "I must ask (=Я должен спросить)" but instead I said "Я должен ответить" and when I undestood my mistake I wanted to apologize to him by saying: "I apologized, I was confused".

Please I don't want the expression: Я сделал ошибку!

    я перепутал слова

    I mixed up the words.

запутался also means "I got confused" but it seems like a more serious state of confusion, like if you tried for a long time to think of what to say and couldn't find the words.

    Thank you.
I just want to know the verb "перепутать" is used also in other cases, such as: I mixed the ingredients or I mixed the documents and now I cannot find them

No, it's used when you mix up/ confuse one thing for another. я перепутал ингредиенты means you used one ingredient instead of another (sugar instead of salt, for example). Mixing ingredients in a recipe would be смешивать/смешать.

or even "смешивать/валить в [одну] кучу"

The Dictionary says though, that it is translated as "to lump" (never seen this word before!), not "I was confused"
"Невозможно передать смысл иностранной фразы, не разрушив при этом её первоначальную структуру."
