From some reason "гневные слова" is translated to me as both "high words" and also "angry words". But why "angry words"?
гнев - anger
That's fine, but is this what you use for "high words"?
high words
гневные слова
перебранка
разговор в повышенном тоне
Так ты употребляешь "angry words" для "high words"? С какой стати....как это значить то же самое? Можно предположим "руссизн"? :P
Can't get last two phrases. =(
Гневные слова - звучит нормально.
"Гневные слова" means the words you pronounce when you are angry. Also we use "повышенный тон" (here you can see "high") in the capacity of characteristic of a conversation.
For example:
Разговор на повышенных тонах.
Он говорит в повышенном тоне.
Они общались на повышенных тонах.
Не повышай тон!
[quote]"Гневные слова" means the words you pronounce when you are angry.[/quote
So it has nothing to do with "high words", it's just how a person who's pissed would talk?
What do you mean by "high words"?
fancy words / grandiloquent words
My Russian dictionary didn't give me any result for "fancy words" but suggested "high words" (which does sound a bit strange). But I really meant "fancy words".
fancy - вычурные
grandiloquent - высокопарные, напыщенные
But I'm looking for a fixed idiom for "fancy words"...you don't have one?
Valda, then it will be literally "high words" = "высокие слова".
For example:
Не говори мне высоких слов.
Поэты очень любят высокие слова.
Какие высокие слова!
Why "high words"? Because in Russian it sounds like "lofty", "elevated" words (also known as "возвышенные слова", you can see the same root "high").
You can use "красивые слова" too. Also we have "высокопарные слова", but it's a bit bookish and literary.
Thanks, Paul, there's my answer :)
