Hey I was wondering what the past tense of to have is? Ive seen it as У вас был...in a little textbook I have, is that correct? I was wondering why it wouldn't have an и at the end? Could someone please explain that to me, and is it followed by the accusative in the present and the past? One final thing why is У+ меня...used more than Иметь? This will end a lot of question marks in my head! Спасибо Болбшой :D
The verb быть will change according to what it is that you have, regardless of who or what has it. And the word takes the nominative, since it isn't gramatically the direct object.
Examples:
у меня (тебя, его, её, нас, вас, них) был дом. - I (you, he, she, we, you, they) had a house.
у меня была собака. - I had a dog.
у меня были руки. - I had arms.
As for иметь vs. у меня... the best way i can put it is as follows:
у + gen is used for concrete things: у нас большой кот. - We have a big cat.
иметь is used more for abstract things: иметь право, возможность - to have the right, to have an opportunity.
Also, in some cases when a part of something is absent, and requires a genetive expression. Example: мы не имеем достаточного запаса топлива. - We dont have a sufficient supply of fuel.
Although, "у меня есть возможность поехать в Киев" sounds perfectly for me.Quote:

You can hear the most pure Ukrainian in central Ukraine, though (Poltava's villages, for example).
