If "mushy" means overly sentimental or affectionate in a cliche'd way, you can probably translate it as (нарочито) сентиментальный, плаксивый, слезливый, нарочито аффективный; "choked up", being rendered as having difficulty to speak because you feel great emotion, can be rendered as онемевший, оцепеневший, остолбеневший, оторопевший, осоловевший))),and задыхающийся(застывший) от волнения(горя , cтраха и т.п.).
