    Vocab Tutor

    I found this site where you can download for free a small program to help memorize vocab with access to vocab lists in several languages including Russian. What do you think?

    Some one on another forum recommended Interlex (http://www.vocab.co.uk/download.htm) and I've been really impressed with it. You can load a series of subject-related dictionaries and it has some nice quizzing features. There seems to be a good base of Russian support -- I think about 25 different card sets to choose f rom. You can also create your own, as I did to help me through some readings. The on DDT posted isn't bad, it just seems to be extremely basic. Better yet, use both of them, since they're both free.

    I downloaded both of them. The first one, though basic, has the advantage of repeating the words that you get wrong, peiodicaly, throughout the session which increases my ability to absorb the word.
    The second program only repeats the words you get wrong until you get it right the first time which doesn't really mean that the word has been learnt.

    EDIT: For the benefit of the Russians who are learning English and those Yanks that don't know much English.

    I had Lingvo Tutor for the same purpose and found it useless.
    I tried to learn some German words in that fashion and discovered that I couldn't remember a single word in just a few hours (except for the self-explaining words like "Fahrrad" constructed from the words I already knew).
    So I think the only effective way to learn words is to learn them in some context (a text, a song etc).

    I believe the Interlex program DOES let you do multiple occurances of the word -- otherwise I'd agree with you that it's not very thorough. You should be able to set up "penalty points" as they call it by going to Options->Question->Penalty Points and checking the box and setting a number.

    I have been playing around with the vocab tutor
    http://www.superliminal.com/tutor/tutor.htm

    It crashes if the text file contains cyrillics so I had to transliterate everything - ugh. Anyway, if anybody is interested in learning some nouns, here is the list I have been studying.

    I never learned how to transliterate so I made the following substitutions.
    ы = ui
    ю = yu
    ц = ts
    ж = j
    - = ь
    -- = ъ

    I also should have CAPITALIZED the stress, but I was too lazy.

    Forget what I said in the previous post.

    I downloaded Interlex last night http://www.vocab.co.uk/download.htm
    and it is far better. It accepts cyrillics, it has tons of preloaded words separated by category so you do not have to make your own vocab lists. The option is still available to create your custom lists. Its the best thing since sliced хлеб.

    Just FYI, you can get more vocab lists, by subject here: http://www.vocab.co.uk/exchange.htm
