Few Stray Questions

I have some questions I could use some clarification on.

1. The conjunction "a" seems a little odd to me. I've done some searching and I think I have a bit of a grasp on how it's used, but not so much why it's used. In the examples I've seen, it covers all the uses of "и" and "но" as
well as a few more. So why have those other conjunctions, specification, or am I missing a key difference?
2. I see examples that have a sentence, then a translation, but the Russian sentence has a comma in places that English sentences normally do not. "Не знаю, что вам сказать", "ты знаешь, что я очень тебя люблю?
What is the rule for this?
3. Are there any rules or trends for when short adjectives are used rather than the standard?
4. The idea of pronouns being in different cases is a strange concept for me, especially since most sites only give 3 examples (showing the basic nominative or accusative forms, which is the easy part to understand). Could anyone give me
some examples of pronouns (not personal pronouns, but demonstrative,determinative, or possessive) in genitive. It seems strange because some of these already show the idea of ownership in the nominative, so what's the genitive's
point?
5. I know that in Spanish, it's more common than not to drop the pronoun used with a conjugated verb, as it is shown through the verb anyway, "Hablo Español." rather than "Yo hablo Español.", is this the case for Russian (and most
languages that use full conjugation)?

Roughly, think of "a" as meaning "whereas" and "но" meaning "however".

In Russian, each clause of a composite sentence should be separated with commas.

Мы взяли зонтики, потому что боялись, что пойдёт дождь.
Эта книга не такая интересная, как вы думаете.
Ящик загораживал дорогу, так что не нельзя было пройти.

Short adjectives normally used as predicates:

Эта комната занята. - This room is occupied.
Я согласен с вами. - I agree with you.
Она очень счастлива. - She is very happy.
("to be" in present tense omitted as usual)

The problem is that the rule is very irregular. There are many cases when a long adjective in preferable. Cf.:

short: Эта комната занята. - ok
long: Эта комната занятая. - wrong
short: Этот фильм интересен. - too bookish
long: Этот фильм интересный. - ok

I guess, short adjectives tend to be used when we speak about temporary conditions ("the room is occupied" now, but not forever), and long adjectives tend to be used when we speak about inherent features of something ("the movie is interesting" - the feature of the movie). But, again, there are many exeptions from this trend.

When a demonstrative pronoun is used as a modifier, it agrees in case with a modified noun:

Эта книга интересная. (nominative)
Я прочитал эту книгу. (accusative)
Мы идём уже три часа по этой дороге. (prepositional)
Идея этого человека очень интересная. (genitive)

When a demonstrative pronoun is used instead of a noun, it changes in cases as an usual noun:

Это было странно. (nominative)
Я знаю это. (accusative)
Он к этому очень стремился. (dative)

Think of pronouns as of a kind of nouns or adjectives. When used in place of nouns, they change in cases as regular nouns. When used as modifiers, they undergo case agreement.


5.

There are no strict rules when you should drop a pronoun used as a subject, however there are some trends:

Normally, a russian sentence has structure topic + comment:
Я уезжаю в Москву завтра. - "я" is a topic (i.e. what is your sentence about) and "уезжаю в Москву завтра" is a comment (i.e. information your sentence provides).

You cannot omit a pronoun if it is in the comment:
Завтра в Москву уезжаю я. (а не кто-то другой) - in this sentence, "я" is the main information, so it cannot be dropped.

You may omit a pronoun if it is in the topic and the topic is clear from context:
— Что ты делаешь завтра?
— Поеду в Москву по делам.

When you have no context (i.e. just starting conversation) or change topic, you should keep a pronoun:
Я пойду купаться в озере, ты идешь со мной? - "Я пойду" - the beginning of the conversation; "ты идешь" - the topic changed.

Well, above is a very rough rule. Different types of negative and interrogative sentences have their own rules on this point. At the same time, the spoken language has less strict rules, as we can use intonation to place emphasis.
So, in general... when in doubt, don't drop a pronoun. :)

both Уезжаю в Москву завтра. and Завтра в Москву уезжаю. without the "Я" sound pretty good to me.

Да с любой интонацией нормально.

Moreover:

Пойду купаться в озере, идешь со мной?

is okay if you're speaking to a single person as opposed to a group of them or if it's obvious from the context who is the ты :)

Also:

Завтра в Москву уезжаю я and завтра в Москву уезжаю

Both are okay and you definitely can omit я in there. The only difference between the sentences is that the Я variant is a typical example of the speaker wanting to explicitly specify something. In that case it's я. Well, of course a proper intonation stress on я is required :)

An English equavalent to this is a sentence like this:

It is I who goes to Moscow tomorrow

Чем обусловлена разговорность? (Почему это нельзя написать без местоимений?)
И интонацией иной в отличие от чего это должно произноситься? (Этот же вопрос про "коммуникационную ситуацию")

Мне, с детства говорящему по-русски, сложно представить ситуацию в которой глаголы настоящего или будущего времени первого или второго лица меняли бы значение фразы без местоимения.

Ну если вы не чувствуете разницы между "Я пойду купаться" и "Пойду купаться"... Даж не знаю.
Первая фраза нейтральная, с неё можно и начать любой диалог, и использовать в середине диалога как ответ.
Вторая фраза всегда подразумевает контекст. Это либо ответ на вопрос (тогда контекст очевиден), либо указание на что-то, про что слушатель знает. Не просто "пойду купаться", а "пойду купаться (ты знаешь, куда)", или "пойду купаться (мы уже обсуждали это)", или "пойду купаться (как обычно делаю в это время)" и т.п. Всегда есть подразумеваемый контекст.
Кроме того, она в большей степени информальна, чем фраза с "я".

1) Agreed.

2) Intonation is a choice of a speaker ;) There is no solid rule to that. For example:

Пойду купаться or пойду купаться

That all depends on which the speaker wants to stress more

Не чувствую никакой разницы. И какой тут нужен контекст? И почему нельзя диалог начать?
По-твоему, если я отправлю СМС - "Еду купаться на озеро Белё во вторник, поедешь со мной?" . то она будет не понята без "Я" вначале? По-моему так всё понятно. И диалог начат, и контекста более чем достаточно. Или всё таки без "Я" непонятно куда я еду и о чём спрашиваю? Интонации-то в СМСке никакой нету.

It would be pretty enough to say that it's better to use pronouns then to ommit them. There was no need to make up stuff about intonation, colloqial styles and contexts.
