Thread: examine

1. Я хочу перевести следующее предложение:
"When they will send their offer, we will examine it carefully".

In the dictionary we have the following options:
проверять, экзаменовать, рассматривать, осматривать, исследовать
What will be the approriate?

2. Также как перевести на русском следующее предложение:
"I did (run) a small research to find a new house according to the requirments you set."
- do (run) a research = делать исследование ???

проверять is closer to "to check" or "to inspect", when you wait that something can be wrong/broken etc
экзаменовать implies an exam: Профессор строго экзаменует студентов.
рассматривать means "to consider" or "to examine", all depend on context, but as a rule it refers to a problem/question/offer/deal/case etc: Мы рассмотрели этот вопрос. Нам нужно рассмотреть это обращение. Мы рассмотрим этот случай завтра.
осматривать is closer to "to view", "to look around" or "to inspect", it implies that you need to take a look.
исследовать usually means "to research" (related to science) or "to examine" for everyday situations: Полицейские тщательно исследовали комнаты в доме убитого (sounds like a phrase from a detective story).

What about the expressions:
1. производить смотр
2. производить обыск

1. производить смотр

It's used in a military context. The expression means that soldiers stand in lines on the parade-ground (or another place for that) and their commander inspects them (how they look etc). So, performing this action is "производить смотр [войск]".
Also it can include a review of their warlike equipment (weapon, tanks, cannons etc) and warships. So, it's close to "review" or "parade" (in a military context). That's like "show of force" - soldiers must look properly, be brave, healthy etc.

2. производить обыск

This one is used in a police context. "Обыск" means "search", like in "body search" = личный обыск. Also cops can "производить обыск" in houses, appartments, cars etc, when they try to find some evidences (= улики) of the crime.


3. Производить осмотр
That's close to the first one, but not that specific. It means "to perform a [visual] inspection" and can be used in different contexts. For example, a doctor "производит осмотр" of a boy:
