The remparts surrounded the town on/by every side

Стены окружали город ..... всех сторон

Which preposition must be used? I see every genitive preposition but can't make out which one fits the best. Can you help me? Tks

And that's the only one that fits.
Also "с каждой стороны", "с внутренней стороны" (on the inside), etc.

It's easy to memorise when you know words "слева" and "справа" ("с левой стороны" and "с правой стороны" correspondingly)

    You're welcome.
That's great you're writing down such things.
I think analysing the words structure gives us better understanding of the language and helps to study. I'm trying to do that learning English words (without too much success though. It looks like English is harder in this regard).

Да, именно там и нашёл. Я тоже не уверен, что они это часто используют, а если и используют, то именно в этом значении. Хотя, Гугл дал на это словосочитание 173.000 результатов. Правда, в основном, вроде бы, в смысле: "изо всех мест".

В связи с этим, предлагаю "компромиссный" вариант: "on all sides around". English natives, where are you?!

    Dictionary says:
all round; on all hands, on every hand; on every side, on all sides; round about; all around; from all quarters; from every quarter; from all sides; from every side; on all hands; round and round; from the four winds.

Hmm... We do have a choice.

    Вспомнилось:
Впереди нас — рать. Позади нас — рать.
"Се — Русь! Се — Русь!" — Вскричал Мамай
    И с раной убежал в Сарай.
    И битвою мать-Россия спасена.

It probably depends, but if you're talking about ramparts surrounding a city, then "on all sides." "On all sides around" sounds really strange This "from every quarter" business would, I think, only be used with movement. E.g., "The soldiers attacked us from every quarter." Sounds British, anyway

In this case the "c" is not "with" but "from". Surrounded from all sides, from all directions. Encircled the town would prob. be the best choice, though.
слева на право from left to right
    сверху from above.

This C has nothing to do with сей or сий (сию минуту!), по крайней мере так мне кажется. Возможно в далеком прошлом какое-то отношение найдешь.

С 'with' происходит из И.Е. sum* ср. лат. cum, con-. Кто-нить знает происхождение С 'from'?

*Oh why does my Indoeuropean leave me at this point?! I would guess that IE 'with' was consonant + nasal vowel. This consonant is the one that split into either phoneme K or phoneme S, giving rise to a major division of Indoeuropean languages into so-called satem and kentum languages. Slavic and hindu are satem, romance and germanic are kentum (hundert is a further development of the K). Thanks for asking.

If you want to include both the verb and the prepositional phrase, I think you'd best say surrounded the town on all sides...

Потому что это дословный перевод с русского. Чтобы человек увидел структуру языка и не смешивал грамматические конструкции разных языков. Я дочери подобным образом объясняю различия русской и английской грамматики, типа I am sitting не Я сижу а Я есть сидящий.

И правильным образом объясняете. Тут раз я посмотрел, как кое-кто по слушании переводa с латинского на английсий объявил: <<А это не то, что писано!>> Вот латинский gerundivum плохо на английский переводится дословно

Yes, c is completely different with ceй и сего

It is clear that one c is a preposition and ceй и сего are demonstrative adjectives; I said that would put them together as mnemonic tricks

with all sides = со всеми сторонами

on all sides = со всех сторон.

Tnx to my southern neighbor (?), of course it's *on* all sides.
