    dictionary

i'm pretty new on this forum so i suppose the question has already been made and the answer has already been given, but what's (according to russians) the best russian-russian dictionary? you know, the one that is commonly known as THE russian dictionary for example in schools? coz professors at my university consider "ожегов" to be the best and i was wondering if there are even better dictionaries. thanx!

I really don't know if an Ожегов is one of the best today. Usually I don't look if such dictionries are good or not; I seek for wanted information, and if I'm not satisifed with what I have I continue the search.

To me, it's a habit saying an Ожегов is second to none. Try any dic you come across. Maybe your criterion will be "the thicker / the more comprehesive, the better." But it's all to your taste or needs.

the trick is, i don't live in russia, in fact, in croatia these things are practically impossible to find. but everyone who has ever been to russia told me that books and dictionaries are sooooo cheap (comparing to the rest of europe)! do libraries in russia have the option of sending books ba order over the internet?

Well, I don't think dictionaries are cheap. Any really good dictionary (and I don't mean thematical dictionaries) will cost you several hundred of roubles. However, they have cheap modifications, but for me as a philologist they're a load of s***. I cannot just understand all those thin booklets for schoolers or businessmen. In principle, if you're a beginner some books can serve you good. I don't think libraries will send you one, it's better to apply for an e-shop.

I have an Ozhegov dictionary from the 1970s. I got it on ebay for around $10. Overall it's quite good. However, as one might expect, it doesn't include a lot of modern terminology.

Hold the Alt Gr (it's to the right of the space bar) button down while you press the vowel.

When it comes to the size of a dic, I like a thick one.
