I believe...
Я был со своей подругой.
или с моей
"Со своей" звучит правильнее.
звучит правильнее?.... или по правилам правильнее?
"Я был с моей подругой" звучит несколько коряво.Quote:

I know a song where he sings. 'Если вижу в танце девушку мою, самого себя не узнаю.'
Im glad i remembered because the last time i heard it, I thought to myself. Wouldnt it be better if he says Свою ??
The song is correct. Свою is acceptible here too. Note, however, that you cannot say: Своя девушка бросила меня. You should say: Моя девушка бросила меня (=My girlfriend's broken up with me). BTW, who sings that song?
I think the rule is that if the sentence has Я in it (я вижу) then "always" use свою (я вижу свою девушку). If there is no Я, you can use мою (вижу мою девушку (notice no я)).
Besides, don't use lyrics as a way to learn grammar :)
Not necessarily "Я". A grammatical subject of a sentence can have something "своё". Most often "свой" is used when the subject is the acting agent of the sentence. In passive voice, the subject will not the be the agent, but "свой" still can be used, albeit carefully, because it often sounds awkward in passive voice.Quote:

The second sentence is grammatically correct, but doesn't sound well.
The general rule for svoy is if the subject of the verb is the possesor of the object.Quote:

In the first peroson they do say in learners' books to ALWAYS use svoy. And not ya and moy.
They say for second person it is optional but if you use svoy it is like saying "your own" in English.
In the third person it can greatlyl alter the meaning
Он любит свою жену - He loves his wife (his own wife)
Он любит его жену - He loves his (another guy's) wife.
