    conjunctions - как бы

OK, a beginner's question, I'm sure ... but even so:

In Ilkay's post "Все боялись...", it's followed by the conjunction как бы - and I didn't know that one yet. (haven't gotten further yet than "...,чтобы..." and "...,...ли...." )

Could anyone tell me after which verbs to use как бы , and maybe give some examples of phrases? And maybe a few with the two other conjunctions as well, so I can get a feel for all three of them?

    заранее спасибо

"Как" и иже с ним в словаре Ушакова

"Как бы не (разг.) - союз цели: выражает боязнь, опасение, чтобы что-н. не случилось."

    with "как бы не"
опасаться - the same meaning ( I think these two are interchangeable ) as бояться.

with "чтобы": опасаться и бояться do not work. There is some action need , like "in order to" -
Детям дали компас, чтобы они не заблудились.
Children were given compass in order that they not get lost.

with "что" - боялись, опасались works if there is something to afraid - remove "не"
-Все боялись, что дети заблудились в лесу.
Everybody were afraid of children got lost.

    Им сказали, что дети заблудились.
They were told that children got lost.

"если бы" - the second part is completed action in past, and first is result of second did (not) take place. Subjunctive(?)

Остаток дня прошел бы спокойно, если бы дети не заблудились.
Had the children not get lost, the rest of the day was quiet.

    Thanks, both of you.

So, is как бы only used after опасаться & бояться? Or after any other verb expressing fear or worry?
Or is it, more generally, used after a verb that expresses emotion (of any kind)?

I'm still not totally sure when I should use it (apart from these couple of examples, of course ).

And what - if any - is then the difference between:
Все боялись, как бы дети не заблудились в лесу
    and
Все боялись, что дети заблудились в лесу
    - if they both mean "Everybody was afraid that the children would get lost in the woods"?

Expression to exercise vigilance - "смотри, как бы не..." - take care not to...
without verb at all- "как бы (нам) не упасть" - wish we/I not fall.

    edit++:
    Как бы сделать так, чтобы...
Как бы нам забраться на дерево?
    - Is there a way we can do (...)

    Maybe there are more.

I tried to imagine when one is appropriate but other isn't and could not do it. But it doesnt mean that they are equal - they may be not.

If talking about other situation, e.g. one-time completed event e.g.
"лодка перевернулась" , then of those tho 1)все боялись, как бы лодка не перевернулась
    2) все боялись что лодка перевернулась
second can't be used if we are sailng in the boat now. Future time should be used insteead "все боялись что лодка перевернется".
It looks like in first example they are equal as we have no information on whether children got lost or not. In second, with boat - 2) can't be used, but if we are expecting the boat to arrive, 2) can be used as well.
