    Choice of сходить and сойти

There's a 'translate from english to russian' exercise in my book where both are used but I can't tell why one is chosen specifically over the other in the following cases:

    1
"Can you tell me where to get off? I want to get to the Bolshoi Theatre
    - The Bolshoi is the forth stop from here. I'll tell you when to get off."

    book's answer:

"Скажите, пожалуйста, когда мне сходить? Мне нужен Болшой театр.
    - Большой театр - четвёртая остановка. Я вам скажу, когда сходить"

    2
"Where do I get off for Red Square?
    - You've got to get off at Revolution Square"

    book's answer:

"Где мне сойти, чтобы попасть на красную площадь?
    - Вам нужно сойти на остановке "Площадь Революций"

In real life, you would never hear any of these expressions. For one thing, nobody takes a bus to the Bolshoy or Red Square, and anyway people don't talk like that.

In any case, I'm pretty sure you could use either skhodit' or sojti in either of these examples. Even if one was right or wrong it wouldn't be that important. And you could ask the same thing in many other ways, without using either of these verbs.

I'm sure someone here will give you a good grammatical answer, but the real answer is that it doesn't matter.

Why not? Many old people (they often used public transport, you know) speak that way.
But Выйти, выходить is much better.

The book appears to be quite old so could it be some of the expressions are a bit old fashioned?

    Thanks for the help guys.

For me only "сойти/сходить" instead of "выйти/выходить" seems a bit old-fashioned. Or maybe not old-fashioned, but it's just that I, personally, would never use that verb in the context above.

The rest seems more or less okay. The station name is "Площадь Революции", by the way.
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

Re: Choice of сходить and сойти

Где мне сойти, чтобы попасть на Красную площадь?
The second verb is perfective, so the first one also should be perfective. (:
I remember seeing "Вы сходите?" as an example of uneducated people's language. But it doesn't matter if "сходить" is old-fashioned or vernacular, when overwhelming majority of people say "выходить." The typical question in public transport is "Вы выходите?" (the stress is very important here!). So in your sentences it would be used in this way:

    — Скажите, пожалуйста, когда мне выходить? Мне нужен Большой театр.
    — Большой театр — четвёртая остановка. Я вам скажу, когда выходить.

    — Где мне выйти, чтобы попасть на Красную площадь?
    — Вам нужно выйти на остановке «Площадь Революции».

But I must say that in expressions "сойти с поезда", "сойти на какой-либо станции" "сойти" is used and it sounds ok there. E. g. when life is compared with a train journey (?). I've found two songs where this word is used:

Re: Choice of сходить and сойти

    Some messages from http://otvet.mail.ru/.
    Вы сходите или нет?

Сходил недавно, но если нужно - выдавлю из себя последнее)))))))))

    С тобой всегда рада СХОДИТЬ!

Вам нужны мои анализы кала? Если нет, то я выхожу... ))

    нет... мы слетаем…

А в словаре значение слова "сходить" посмотреть не пробовали?

Посмотрите фильм с Л. Дуровым, поймёте.
I don't know which film is meant.
Two people posted the joke. One of its variants:
    В автобусе:
    — Девушка, вы выходите?
    — Выходят замуж!
    — Девушка, вы сходите?
    — Сходят с ума!
    — Может, вы вылазите?
    — Вылазят, когда рождаются!
Мужчина, пинком выпихивая ее из автобуса:
    — С днем рожденья, сука!
