Why not "встретить"? How can an event which occurs at a singular point in time require the imperfective?

Ah, because it's not a single point in time...they'll be partying all night, not just raising their glasses once, downing them, and going home... :D

Maybe it will be helpful to remember that imperfective verbs can be answered the question "что делать?" (встречать) and perfective ones "что сделать?" (встретить).Quote:
