Aspect of the infinitive

Здравствуйте

I was wondering recently what the differences between the aspects are when used in the infinitive. I mean, whenever I use an inifinitive in Russian, I seem to either use the "wrong" one, or if I choose the right one, I won't be able to explain why it's right. There are probably differences in meaning, but what would they generally be?

Eg:

Я хочу работать/поработать.
Он хочет писать/написать письмо

Я хочу работать. - I want to work.
Probably, I do not have a job and I want to find it.
Another possibility: your boss doubts whether you are a good employee to leave you at his company, or maybe he should fire you. And he asks:
- Ты хочешь работать?
- Да. Я хочу работать.

Я хочу поработать. - I want to work for a while.
You has been resting for a few hours, and now you think you are ready to do a little work, and then rest again.

поработать - "to work for a while" (limited in time, usually shortly)

Он хочет писать письмо Sounds a bit unnaturally. You will see why later:

Он хочет писать письма. - He wants to write letters
He wants to write regularly, every day, or every month, unlimited in time.

Он хочет написать письмо
He wants to write one letter. (To write it completely, a whole letter).

Он хочет написать письма
He wants to write several letters. (He knows the quantity. He is going to write them (completely) at once, e.g. tonight.

So... to summarise then:

Мне надо сегодня помочь матери с домашними делами.
Он хочет изучать русский язык в университете.
Мне надо кормить собаку три раз в дне
Мне надо теперь накорить кошку.

So it's basically dependant on whether the action performed by the verb is a one off, or not? Or the duration of the action?

I found another example that doesn't seem to conform to the rule, though. What happens here?

Я всегда рад помочь тебе - Surely the word "always" in this sentence implies that the action could take place many times... so why is the infinitive in this sentence perfective?

Basically, yes. But I think there might me some other nuances as well.

Я люблю помогать друзьям. - the rule works here

Я рад помочь другу. Я рад прочитать новую книгу. Я всегда рад посмотреть интересный фильм.

It seems to me that the word рад just requires prefective verbs.
There are some cases when the aspect of an infinitive is defined by the main word (рад in this case). At least, when рад is used figuratively, in the sense of "is ready to do someting".

However, there are such cases as:

Я всегда готов читать книги.
I am always ready for reading books. It means, I am always ready to spend time reading.
and
Я всегда готов прочитать интересную книгу.
I am always ready to read an interesting book. It concentrates attention not on the process of reading, but on the result (to have a book read, from beginning to the end).

I am not sure I covered all the cases here, thus, ask questions :)

Ok, so aside from the first rule we've established, it seems to me that if the action is concerned with something other than the actual infinitive, then the infinitive must be perfective: Examples:

Я всегда рад насетить бабушку (но не дедушку, потому что мы не ладим очень хорошо)

Я всегда рад сыграть с отцом в теннис.

"Рад" looks like an exception to the "aspect rule", if that makes sense, as I can't find any more examples where the first rule doesn't hold up.

Your examples are correct. As for the general rule, I am not quite sure. Maybe you're right, but I have to investigate more examples. I'll let you know later:)

I think the imperfective means it's "generally". I want to do some "generally".
And the perfective means some concrete action.

Я хочу читать. (generally; what to read is not that important)
Я хочу прочитать эту книгу. (concrete; this book)

Я хочу что-нибудь делать (I want to do something [generally, in my life])
Я хочу что-нибудь сделать (I want to do something right now/tomorrow/for you/etc.)

Yes, you cannot say "Я хочу прочитать" without specifiyng "what".

However, there are more nuances.

Compare:

Я хочу посмотреть этот фильм. - That works here.

Now, imagine that two roommates are going to watch TV, but they cannot come to agreement which channel to see. And one of them says:

Я хочу смотреть этот фильм. - This sentence puts an accent to the process itself, not to its final result.

As you said above "This sentence puts an accent to the process itself".
Я хочу смотреть этот фильм (т.е. я хочу именно смотреть фильм, а не делать что-либо еще) - I want to be watching the movie.

If the verb is imperfective then this sentence would have some other meaning
Я хочу посмотреть этот фильм (напр. чтобы знать, чем он закончится) - I want to have this movie watched

"Я хочу смотреть" instead of "я хочу посмотреть" can be used only in some specific context. Example:
Я обычно хочу смотреть новости, а мой брат - футбол, и поэтому мы всё время ссоримся.
(As you can see, the word обычно is key here, so the imperfective aspect is explainable, right?)
But the situation can be also a bit different:
- Вася, почему вы там ссоритесь?
- Я хочу смотреть новости, а Петя - футбол! Он отнял у меня пульт!
(Here, it's not something what happens usually, generally, but it's about taking a decision [what we will be watching, what process do we choose], so it's imperfective; although the perfective case is possible in this context, too).

Как правило, надо использовать совершенный вид, когда поступок сам случается? Например:

Я сегодня хожу в город, чтобы купить новую книгу для русского языка.

Я люблю вечером помочь матери приготовися ужин. - нужно пунктуация?

Они хотят завтра сыграть в футбол в парке.

Надо использовать несовершенный вид, когда описывают обычный поступок, или поступок, который не закончился? Например:

Каждый год я езжу в Уэльс, чтобы навещать дедушку и бабушку. Как говорит по-русски "maternal grandparents"?

Моя младшая сестра готовится всегда со мной к своим экзаменам, чтобы я могу ей объяснять свои ошибки.

I meant ... "when the action occurs on its own".

In the sentence "У меня много трудностей..." the есть is no needed... I can't explain why, maybe because it's something abstract...?
But anyway the sentence doesn't look perfectly Russian. Although maybe I'm wrong... You can say "Виды русских глаголов доставляют мне много трудностей", or "Виды русских глаголов трудно мне даются", or "Я очень мучаюсь с видами русских глаголов"...
