Asking if something is open or closed?

I'm working through the penguin book for beginners Russian and thier phrases used to say if something is open is this:

kagda rabotayet musee? When is the museum open?
pachyemoo resteran nye rabotayet? Why is the resteraunt closed?

работать - means to work right? I cant remember but I'm sure I have seen a word for open (otkrit I think off the top of my head) I want a simple phrase to remember, just want to check it is right.

    Thanks
    Andy

The verb работать can be used either for someone or something and means also to run and to operate.

окна и дверь открыты = the windows and the door are open.
окна и дверь закрыты = the windows and the door are closed.

In your example you can use "открыть" too. They are quite interchangeable.
    Another example:
музей открыт с восьми утра до девяти вечера = музей работает с восьми утра до девяти вечера = the museum is open from 8 am to 9 pm
"Happy new year, happy new year
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbour is a friend"
