деваться by itself doesn't mean disappear, it doesn't mean anything. You can say "Он пропал" (he disappeared), not "Он девался". It's a phrasal colloquialism "куда-то деваться" which means disappear. In fact, disappear is not a very accurate translation, if an object куда-то девался, this means that the object was misplaced. If it's a person, then the person cannot be found at the moment, but he is likely to show up later.
