Oh ffs :P When I enter впустил it returns this result:

впускать

(кого-л./что-л.) несовер. - впускать; совер. - впустить

leaving me to believe it was imperfective but I can see that it is the perfective now, by looking at the -ил rather than -ал at the end of the past verb.
