I can deduce that it has derived from конченый человек (literally: finished man) a man nobody believes in, hopeless (all is lost for him).
It most definetely doesn't mean that he's dead, so he's finished just figuratively.

You can say that about heavy drug addicts, for example. And of course, such shortening could mean also a freak.

BTW, "ерунда" is not a slang word. It's very common and literary. It also can be used as an answer to thanking. For example:
- Огромное Вам спасибо!
- Да что Вы, ерунда.
