I read that щас is often used to mean нет. I've only ever heard it as short for сейчас. How frequently is it actually used in the first sense?

Using 'щас' as 'no' is informal (so informal that many people consider it as bad taste). But the word is quite common. It has a shade of irritation.

Yes, it's used sometimes.
When it's ment to convey refusal it's pronounced with a sharp sarcastic tone.

In fact, in the first sense it also means "сейчас", only sarcastically. Something like "Yeah, I'll do it right away.. NOT".

"глажка" is a colloquial word for the process of ironing. It-ogo reffered to the common saying (in sarcastic tone): "Ага, щаз, только шнурки поглажу". I't means "Yes, I'll do it right away after I iron my shoe-laces" (since nobody do that it's some funny way to say "never").

Nothing new.

Iron (n) - утюг
to iron (v) - гладить
ironing (gerund) - глажка

Everything is completely literary and common.

Actually I transformed original colloquial proverb into exaggerated literary style. (Effect of " ")

Практически невозможно встретить человека к-рый утюжит, а не гладит. А полное название утюга - гладильный утюг.
