After a while, people got lazy and couldn't be bothered to draw the nose. Russians just took this laziness one step further and stopped drawing the eyes too! )))

Maybe Russians are not just lazy but too aesthetic too. Since the main point of a smiley face is the smile itself Russians type the smile to inspire you as the Cheshire Cat's smile inspired Alice.
