    сухарь

Does сухарь translate to something like "stick-in-the-mud" -- someone who is no fun and always serious?

    It's not so.
Dried-up man, who doesn't feel (for example: to feel drawn to smb/smth or to feel pity). He is the man without any emotions to the problems, opinions, feelings.
    "сухарь" - бесчувственный (insensibl)

Сухарь - selfish and indifferent man devoid of gentleness, kindness
