Thread: подсолнух and подсолнечник

My understanding is that both подсолнух and подсолнечник mean sunflower. My guess is that подсолнечник is the diminutive of подсолнух. Is that correct? Would one be more appropriate for sunflowers grown for oil production or edible seeds as opposed to sunflowers grown in the garden for ornamental purposes? Or are they completely equivalent and interchangeable?

I'm not sure if the following sentences are grammatically correct, but is the right form of sunflower used in each? Also if the sentences are messed up could you please let me know what's wrong with them. Thanks!

Подсолнечник является родным для Северной Америки.

(The sunflower is native to North America.)


Петр Великий принёс подсолнечника в Россию.

(Peter the Great brought the sunflower to Russia.)

Урожай подсолнечника производится семян много.

(The sunflower crop produced much seed.)

Она попыталась спрятаться в поле подсолнухов.

(She tried to hide in the field of sunflowers.)

Лепестки подсолнечника являются красивый жёлтый.

(The sunflower’s petals are a beautiful yellow.)

Урожай подсолнечника произвёл много семян. (Although this sentence is grammatically correct it doesn't sounds native. I don't know how to translate it using one sentence. Урожай подсолнечника был большим. Было собрано много семян.)

Dear forum engine, my message is not short!

Agrarian or botanist would say "лепестки подсолнечника", but "normal" people say "лепестки подсолнуха".

The rest sentences are correct.

No, it’s not. Just different suffixes.

it's possible that there's a technical scientific term for something, but people may often change the pronounciation and it becomes a 'folks' variant (in Russian such words are called разговорные слова, разговорная лексика, and also there are просторечные слова, просторечная лексика, просторечье and this connotation will be mentioned in the dictionary). In case with подсолнух word it's used on a massive scale due to 'language economy'.

Thanks for the sunflower information. Nice song too. BTW, what does курлычут mean? I couldn't find the word in the dictionary and Google translate didn't know it either. I did find a phrase with another form of the verb:
курлычет кошка на заборе
but I'm not too sure what cats and cranes have in common and so the meaning of

Never thought about it. Mayby I`m not sophisticated enough in botany.
Подсолнухи \ подсолнечники - I would use any, depending on my mood.
Even if it is not 100% correct.



Same stuff: Пожарный vs Пожарник
Ordinary people use them both, assuming a fire fighter. But a real fire department worker may be offended on the second one.
Пожарный = Fire fighter
Пожарник = Arsonist
