The problem with "not" in English, is that it comes from germanic languages, where the word "not" goes AFTER the thing it modifies. "I think not.". For whatever reason, the phrasing using "do not" became vastly more popular for negative sentences, and people began to believe that the word goes before what it modifies. So we have both systems. Which is broken.
