Would I say:

Я сорок лет назад изучал Русскам Языком.

then you'd be wrong.

Я спас исламистскую революцию сорок лет назад.

I found this echange extremely interesting from a semantic point of view. The difference in inflection between Russian and English became quite apparent.. I thoroughly appreciate the help I received and in no way is this a criticism. I just found it interesting from a linguistic point of view.

When I asked "Should I say ......" I forgot to put the question mark at the end. In spoken English, the reordering of the words "I should ..." (declarative) to "Should I ..." (Interogative) are enough to change the meaning from a statement to a question. I forgot to put in the question mark, so I think Dogboy182 interpreted my intended question as a declarative statement. I must be more carefull with the question marks!

If I understand this properly, it should be either:

Благодарю вас - the verb is transitive, so the direct object should be in accusative

or

Я вам благодарен - if I'm right, it's like saying "I owe you one", at least in its grammatical structure.

You are completely right, Moryachka. Only using "Благодарю" for expressing gratitude is too formal. Use "большое спасибо" and you'll always sound natural.

Большое спасибо - широко распространённое выражение благодарности и звучит вежливее, чем просто спасибо.
Спасибо. - Thank you.
Большое спасибо. - Thank you very much.
