I understand the meaning of this expression - that your life is so bad that it feels like someone is beating you up with a wrench. But what is the origin of the expression?

May be someone used this phrase in that meaning as a joke. Basically it means:

Жизнь здесь бьёт ключём = The place is full of life

бьёт ключём = pours out like a spring

Seeing that you are John and Douglas at that makes me think you are not Russian and maybe you are not pooling our legs. If so your post might very well be placed into the Анекдоты, шутки, шуточные стишки, смешные истории thread and win a grand prize there.
The ключ is not a wrench but a spring of water and life is as full of energy and joy as is the water merrily coming out of that spring.
