Thread: Жениха хотела

Here is a short section of a song "Жениха хотела" from my favorite singers Glu-kosa and Berka Cerduchka.
I did a word for word translation using my on-line dictionary and I am afraid I am losing some meaning in this translation. Can somebody help?

кого ж ты выбрала дурная это ж просто атас
какой-то страшный несуразный говорит ерунду
и если это выбор твой на свадьбу я не иду
не пойду ду ду ты ж просто дура

somthing-like scary absurd say rubbish
and if this choice of yours in wedding, I wont go

What does the word "атас" mean? It was not in my dictionary.

well, атас is an interjection which can have different meanings.
It can correspond to "watch out" when used to warn of danger,
or to "unbelievable/amazing" - expressing strong surprise or indignation.
Yere it's used to express disapproval. It's something like "he's a complete loser".

So the correct translation should be something like as follows:

Here I told you many times
whom you chosen so badly, this such simple loser
somthing-like scary absurd say rubbish
and if this is your choice in wedding, I wont go
wont go-go-go you such simple fool

It still sounds a bit funny. I looked up "какой-то" and it translates to "something-like" but it doesnt fit quite right in the song.

Well, word-for-word translation won't do here, I believe.
какой-то can be translated as "just", "kind of"
or even omitted. It's used as an intensifier.

IMHO, your translation isn't corect, I'll try to think of a better variant^-)))

My try:

I've told you over and over,
you fool, who you've picked is a total loser,
some crazy absurdity who talks nonsense,
and if this is your choice for a wedding, I'm not going,

So let me get this straight:

"дурная" means "you fool" (feminine)

"ерунду" means "nonsense"

"страшный" means "crazy"?

I thought "страшный" means frightful, scary, terrible, dreadful.

"дурная" is an adjective. It means foolish or stupid. "Дура" is the feminine version for "fool." It is in the poem.

"ерундуА" means "nonsense"

"страшный" means terrible or awful.
