    Довезти vs. Подвезти

I was just reading one of my favorite paperbacks, 750 Russian Verbs and Their Uses, by Issa R. Zauber, a handsome volume, nice wide margins, 8-vo, paper grain running vertically as it should, $19.95 and worth every penny, -- but I digress.

When talking about hitchhikers it's almost always "подвездти". The meanings of these two words are mostly overlaping, but I think "подвезти" among other meanings refers more to situation when you are going to some destination and just take another person with you to do him a good turn, while "довезти" means you planned the trip or rather made it with the strict purpose to get the person to that particular place.

    EDIT:
May be that will help better.

    IMHO

ПОДВЕЗТИ - give somebody a ride
ДОВЕЗТИ - deliver from point A to point B (and not to dump halfway)

    I would have said:

I am going the same way and I do it because it convenient for me

I do it regardless of my convenience

Подвезти (from подвозить) = to give a ride/lift

    1. Example - your friend asks you to подвезти him to shopping center.

    2. Example - you're pushing wheelbarrow hard and finally позвозите it to the pile of sand to dump it.

    Довезти (from довозить)

    1. You're given a parcel and asked to довезти it to the adressee (to the destination point)

    2. Your friend goes out form shopping center and asks you to довезти him to his place.

Still not clear but the fog is lifted somewhat. Довести is more deliberate, sort of "deliver" as opposed to "take". But then there is this conflict:

This can only mean "deliver" or are you saying it might mean "drop off building materials".

    vs.
ДОВЕЗТИ - deliver from point A to point B (and not to dump halfway)

No, no dumping, no way. You just deliver. If you подвозите the materials, it just means that the materials are not available in point B, so you take some from point A and just deliver them.

Подвезти строительные материалы = to deliver building materials (as usual - nothing special. Builders can say "Подвезли стройматериалы" - the building materials have arrived.

Довезти строительные материалы = imagine, you're experiencing some difficulties while on route and you're not sure if you can make it. You're calling your boss and he tells you to довезти the materials to the destination at all costs. Довезти means completeness of the task.

vs. ДОВЕЗТИ - deliver from point A to point B (and not to dump halfway)
more = to reach the destination (provided that something may happen to prevent it).
