ужасно жадные = "очень жадные"

до жизни жадные = (colloquial, metaphoric) full of life, hedonistic

My opinion is that the sentence is very hard to translate, but I definitely wouldn't translate it like that... I also don't think it's "hedonistic" here. I think the translation very much depends on the wider context here, that is what the speaker meant.

Generally, yes. But it seems to be too mundane and weak an expression. Maybe something like "they are eager to live" or "they want to live up to the hilt."
